Your Brothers’ Burden – A Rabbi’s Perspective

Our Responsibility to Help Our Brother

The events of the Gaza Disengagement are well known to every Israeli and concerned Jew around the world, but the simple facts don’t tell the story.

It is the story of thousands of families whose lives were uprooted without concern for their future. The trauma is difficult for anyone to imagine who didn’t live through it personally.

Shifra Shomron and her family were expelled from their home. This is their story and the story of thousands of others. Though the characters are fictionalized, the events and feelings, debates and decisions were the ones lived by everyone in Gush Katif.

It is an important book to read because it gives an insight into the personal tragedy of those who suffered. Hanoseh b’ol im chavero – we are obligated to carry our friends’ burdens with them. This is not their story. It is our story.
